I try to practice what I preach

If you live in Ohio and are subscribed to my newsletter, you are probably thinking “Why is she telling me about this play that is going on in Connecticut?” After all, we at StoryMatters have done our best to invite all of New England to see my play The Secrets of Brown and White.

But, what does that have to do with this newsletter and our business, StoryMatters?

A lot.

You see, if I am going to teach YOU, my clients and prospective clients how to tell a good story, I had better practice what I preach by practicing the art and craft of storytelling!

In fact, a play or a screenplay is not simply one story well told, but each character has their own story that weaves in and out throughout the script. And that is part of what I am working on for this current version.

My love of story comes from childhood when I would climb into bed with my parents early in the morning and recite “poems,” as I used to call them. They were actually nursery rhymes, but my dad, who also loved stories, would recite them with me. In fact, he once said that when we were in the car together, I would tell him stories off the top of my head from about the age of 3 or 4. And he would think “Who is this kid?”

(An exaggeration, maybe, but needless to say, I was a verbal child.)

And then in the 5th grade, my sister used took me to see a high-school production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” And I couldn’t stop thinking, “I want to do that! I want to be up there.” And when I was “up there” in the 9th grade and the director wanted to skip a plot point, I told him why that wouldn’t work. Cause I instinctively knew story structure.

Two degrees, and advanced acting training from a master teacher later, I ended up using my story skills to teach people, not just story, but how to create change and how to uphold heathy corporate culture. Both in person and in e-learning.

And the truth is, you can teach a lot of different topics - especially if you can tell a good story.

So, I just wanted to let you know that I am out of the office the week of July 15th practicing my story skills. But we are booking into September for 1:1 and facilitations, and I look forward to working with you on all of your learning needs. And stories!

And if you are in Connecticut, The Secrets of Brown and White, really is good story so come and see it in person!
